I wish there were a way to teach science as the empirical method to school kids, as opposed to "a bunch of neat stuff about nature." I imagine the main reason people can't distinguish good science is because they've never been taught exactly what science is. And the media's constant pushing of astrology, psychic stuff, UFO and ancient astronaut specials... don't get me started. That ass who contacts the dead on TV is using techniques Harry Houdine exposed in the 1920s and James Randi has kicked apart over and over in his articles.

Word verification: "rantsup."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9194378690159698339.post-7740744160206618502008-11-20T08:21:00.000-08:002008-11-20T08:21:00.000-08:00And if I could read, I would have noticed the arti...And if I could read, I would have noticed the article was entitled PAPAL not PAYPAL.

BettyTimWarphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14741882160865926550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9194378690159698339.post-77770097294485568582008-11-19T18:04:00.000-08:002008-11-19T18:04:00.000-08:00Kevin has run in to the bias at the old Dino exhib...Kevin has run in to the bias at the old Dino exhibit in which a docent (if I recall correctly) refused to acknowledge, early on, Bakker's now more accepted theory of dinosaurs being more like birds than reptiles.adelheidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16916592652832704860noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9194378690159698339.post-39801843079749967932008-11-19T13:20:00.000-08:002008-11-19T13:20:00.000-08:00Yeah, but you gotta admit -- when the lioness trie...Yeah, but you gotta admit -- when the lioness tried to come through the plexiglass at the young woman who had the temerity to turn her back on her, it was a keeper.Ken Chiacchiahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04626815789187013583noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9194378690159698339.post-82006209949364288092008-11-19T09:21:00.000-08:002008-11-19T09:21:00.000-08:00The Field Museum and American Museum totally kick ...The Field Museum and American Museum totally kick the pansy ass of the Carnegie dino hall. It's not the job of scientific educational institutions to pull punches with the data -- it's their job to present the scientific evidence and viewpoint to the public.

The Field Museum carries this over onto its website -- such as here:

http://www.fieldmuseum.org/evolvingplanet/allabout_7.asp#myth6

The other great disappointment was Busch Gardens in Florida. It is one of the best zoos I have ever seen. The hippo exhibit alone is worth the price of admission. Wonderful great apes.

But it is "corporate policy" that there be no mention of evolution in the interpretive signs. Don't wanna piss off the looney millenial fringies. This leads to some pretty convoluted presentation of "information," with words like "adapted" verboten.

Just one example of why educational institutions need to be independent; Busch Gardens provides good entertainment, and seems to practice excellent husbandry, but fails as a zoological institution.

On the other hand, if uber-corporate Disney can host big gay weddings at Cinderella's castle, maybe we should just call out Anheiser-Busch as a bunch of corporate pussies.Heather Houlahanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13891198124130533198noreply@blogger.com
